Society The RHS is the world's leading horticultural organisation and the name behind the Chelsea Flower Show - but you'll find no Latin names and scientific gobbledygook in their site. Rather a brief insight into the work that goes on in the RHS, and a load of useful links. Also news of their thoughts on genetic engineering, the use of limestone and peat in gardening, details on new bugs and unusual seeds. www.rhs.org.uk The National Trust This site will be of particular interest to non-members because its mainstay is a list of information on National Trust properties that members already have in their handbook. There's also a news section, as well as details of hiring holiday homes, purchasing gifts and merchandise, and of course how to join. www.nationaltrust.org.uk Barnsdale Gardens Geoff Hamilton might be gone but the garden he created at Barnsdale lives on and you can visit it here at this site. As well as descriptions in words and pictures of the areas Geoff created got 'Gardeners World', like his Artisan's Cottage Garden and Gentleman's Cottage Garden, you'll also find details of the rest of Barnsdale, as well as opening times and how to get there. www.barnsdalegardens.co.uk Cacti This is the site of the British Cactus and Succulent Society, a great place to visit whether you know nothing about them or have been growing them for years. www.cactus-mall.com/bcss/index.html British Gardening Online A comprehensive site with a 'plant finder' - you specify the conditions of the soil, weather, and the type of plant you'd like to grow (flowers, foliage, evergreen...), and the finder throws up numerous choices. Join a discussion group - or even send bugs to a specific address and they'll identify them for you! www.oxalis.co.uk Roses This is the site of Harkness champion breeders of roses. As well as the Harkness catalogue, there are details of the Royal National Rose Society and advice on planting, feeding, pruning, diseases and problems with soil. Click on Roses of Special Merit and you can find out which roses are most suitable for different planting situations - and your garden. www.roses.co.uk Compost All you ever wanted to know about compost is here at the delightfully named RotWeb site. It's an American site, but compost is compost no matter what continent you live in. You'll find an introduction to composting, what it is, why you need it and how to make some yourself. Bright, fun, with a lot of interesting environmental links. net.indra.com/~topsoil/Compost_Menu.html Virtual Garden Online magazine on all things green-fingered with plenty of features, news and forums.
