Buying Goods From Abroad
When you buy goods from abroad you must still pay applicable taxes. Generally speaking there are three potential charges for goods bought aboard a tariff (customs duty), VAT and excise duty. Tariffs are being reduced over the next few years, but you may still be asked to pay between 5 and 15 per cent of the product value depending on what it is. Some products may be charged more. You need to contact Customs & Excise for the exact tariff and you might never be charged anyway. Tariffs do not apply to goods purchased within the EU. VAT is currently charged at 17.5 per cent but does not apply to orders totalling less than £18 keep your orders below that magic threshold if you can.
If youre buying from within the EU, VAT is added in the country of origin and will vary accordingly. There is no VAT or tax levied on books so you can buy from abroad safe in the knowledge that the price quoted is the only one youll pay. Excise duty is charged on cars, alcohol, tobacco products, kerosene and other products youre less likely to buy from abroad. Unlike tariffs, excise duty does apply to goods purchased with the EU.
