Car tax, formally known as Road Fund Licence, is a tax on cars of £155 per year from 9 March 1999, and between £15 and £60 for motorbikes.

From June 1 1999, cars with engines smaller than 1100cc will pay only £100 per year. This is unchanged by the 2000 budget.

From April 2001 onwards the level of car tax will be based primarily on carbon dioxide emissions.
